Federal Relations

For more than 150 years, the members of the American Institute of Architects have worked to advance our quality of life through design. From designing the next generation of energy-saving buildings to making our communities healthier and more vibrant, from helping neighborhoods rebuild after disasters to exporting American design know-how to the rest of the world, architects turn dreams and aspirations into reality.

At the federal level, the AIA's Government Affairs Department works with the U.S. Congress, White House and various agencies to educate government leaders and others about the profession and the AIA's policies, positions, and objectives pertaining to community development and livability, as well as the business and practice of architecture. This effort involves the AIA in a range of issues including housing, urban renewal, accessibility, historic preservation, energy, environmental standards, security, government design practices, school construction, transportation, procurement, project delivery, small business operations, and tax policy.

At the state level, the AIA collaborates with components and members to promote the Institute's policies and positions on a broad range of legislative and regulatory issues.

The Local Relations team promotes the AIA's public policies and empowers local components to effectively manage their legislative, regulatory, and legal efforts.
